离异父母的七个孩子，厌倦了总是每周更换房子，因此决定建立一个反抗父母的计划。。故事背景是二次世界大战后美国中西部小镇，一位作家回到伊利诺州的老家，在那里邂逅了在死亡边缘挣扎的赌徒，他俩到处游荡，试图使这个小镇起死回生，期间，他又碰到了一个放荡性感的女子爱上了他，反映他从渴望成名到觉醒的一段心路历程。全片文学气息浓厚，像是作家心理研究的个案多於一个戏剧故事，但导演文森特．明尼里成功地营造了时代气氛，对於几个主角的复杂性格也做了深入而有趣的刻画，演员演得有神彩，在平凡事件中令人感受到人生的苦与乐。。Just over 40 years ago, marriage in China was arranged by the state.
